Do you want to make your home flow beautifully? Materials In The Raw have some expert outdoor design ideas and tips to help you learn how!

Alfresco dining. Outdoor entertaining. Open plan living. We’re all about letting our lives spill outside in Australia. But, allowing your home to seamlessly and beautifully flow from inside to out isn’t always as easy as it seems. The homes that do ‘indoor-outdoor’ well may appear effortless, but we can guarantee they were carefully planned to make the most of their transitional space.

French Doors

This is an obvious and traditional way of achieving outdoor indoor flow, but it works. Install some French doors from your living and dining space facing into your backyard. All you have to do is open them up and let the world in. Grab yourself a nice wooden outdoor dining setting, or if your budget allows install some awnings or a pergola, so you have some nice and relaxing space and shelter to wine, dine and unwind in during those long Australian summer nights.

Install a Sunroom

Sunrooms are a great way to experience the warmth and light of the outdoors without unnecessary exposure to the elements. They are the ideal choice for creating outdoor indoor flow for those who are especially sensitive to the sun, or who suffer from allergies and want to avoid spending too much time outside. They can be filled with light-loving plants (just remember to water them!) and other features of the outdoors to create the natural vibe. A very small water feature in one could also be a good idea to keep bringing the outdoors in.

Decking

Timber decking is another way to keep the flow going. You can have wherever you like; at one side of the house, at the front, at the back or even surrounding the entire house. Decking can be used in every way that a normal backyard can – you can have a barbecue, outdoor furniture and other decorative bits and pieces to help turn it into a second living space. Go even further and build an awning or shade structure to provide shelter and protection from the sun, and if you're after additional privacy you can build some timber walls too.

Keep Your Design Theme Flowing

One of the most effective ways to keep an indoor to outdoor flow consistent is to ensure that your theme continues from your living, dining and kitchen spaces to your yard. If you have a light and dark timber contrast happening indoors, continue this outside. If you have your yard paved with a particular colour, consider matching it with your kitchen tiles.
