At Materials In The Raw, we are passionate gardeners! Summer time in Australia as we all know, can take a huge toll on our gardens. Sometimes the scorching hot temperatures can become too overbearing for our plants, and can leave them to suffer.

This burst of warmer weather makes for a tough environment for plants and lawns to survive, especially at a time when we want to get out and make the most of these spaces.

Your garden can change in appearance from green lively and vibrant, to brown scorched and dry in a very short space of time as the heat continues to rise. We want to help ensure that you’re taking sufficient action to prevent this from happening.

Allow the garden to have some longevity and be resilient over the summer. By taking on board these important tips you will stay ahead of the high levels of heat and you’ll protect your garden when it needs it the most.

Water Generously in Dry Conditions:

During high temperatures, the greatest danger to your plants is not receiving enough water to survive. Making sure your soil retains enough moisture must be your top priority, as it’s imperative, with such dry and hot conditions only increasing over the summer period that this is monitored daily.

We believe that retaining this moisture and finding the best ways in maintaining a backyard that’s well hydrated regularly and more frequently should be a core focus.

It’s a given, that the most obvious way to care for your plants is through increased watering. However, bear in mind that over-watering can actually do more harm than good and can be damaging, even in summer, in the sense that you may drown the plant. So it’s a must just to be mindful of the water usage, and how often you’re attending to your backyard. As it’s important to maintain a healthy routine and dedicate an adequate amount of attention towards your plants in order to help them survive the heat. You too can survive the heat by buying promotional products like water bottles!

It’s All About Mulch:

A definite must this summer, if you haven’t already, is introducing mulch into your backyard. This is the perfect solution to assist with the summer heat, as it has significant value in adding organic matter to your soil, which then makes for an improvement in the health of your garden and allows it to be a lot more resistant to disease and pest damage. Hence, the benefits that come once laid on top of the soil surface, creates a protective layer, and one that can greatly help you conserve the water around your plants’ roots.

With mulch being able to retain up to 70% more water in soil than unmulched soil, it’s a no brainer that you make this a permanent resident in your garden. By assisting in retaining the moisture in the soil, as well as suppressing weeds, it then grants the soli to remain cool and also allow for your garden to come alive by adding value to the overall appearance and style of your backyard.

Avoid The Crowds:

What many people aren’t unaware of when planting in the backyard, is the over-crowding that can occur with plants. Plants become overwhelmed when positioned too close together, as this shortage of space leaves these crowded plants to create their own humidity. What this then does is allow for diseases such as downy and powdery mildew to thrive and become a regular burden in the garden.

To ensure this is avoided over the summer make sure you designate enough space between your plants. If you have positioned them too close to one another you run the risk of the plants growing poorly due to the on-going competition and fight for nutrients, water and light.

So if you get out there and contribute the right amount of space between plants this will rapidly improve the airflow around them which will greatly reduce this humidity and allocate foliage to dry more quickly.

Materials In The Raw hope you’ve found these tips useful and you put them into play over this summer period.

Happy gardening!!
