Retaining walls need to be engineered to hold the slope back and allow expanses of level ground to be obtained.

One of the common mistakes when choosing and building retaining walls is not taking into consideration the amount of soil required to be held. The forces of earth and water movement can cause a badly constructed retaining wall to fail and collapse.

If you are going to erect a wall more than 1 metre high then a good choice is to go with interlocking (dry stack) masonry retaining wall blocks. Advantages of using dry stack retaining walls in your garden include: 

  • Infinite design options including formal lines, curves, corners and stairs.
  • Lots of attractive block sizes, shapes, colours and faces are available.
  • No mortar in construction means that walls can be built progressively.
  • Topography can be manipulated to obtain level, sloped or stepped landscapes.
  • Minimal maintenance is required if walls installed correctly.

As a guide, retaining walls over 1m high must be designed by and engineer and all walls must comply with AS4678. However, before installing any retaining wall it is necessary to check local government regulations and manufacturers installation recommendations. Considerations include; foundations, drainage and backfill.
